Inspiring

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Have been watching some of Obama’s speeches on his youTube channel. Is this guy possibly one of the most inspiring politicians to be seen in a long time? This has got to be a walk-over right? …

Down and Out Around Smithfield Meat Market!

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

On Saturday I was involved in a cycling event called the Smithfield Nocturne. The idea for the day was to have all types of cycling events round Smithfield Meat Market – the race I was involved in was the ‘folding bike race’ in which everyone gets dressed up in work wear then runs to their collapsed bike on the start line, unfolds it then does 4 laps round the market.

Unfortunately although I had a great start and was 2nd out of 30 cycling off the start line, I ended up going too fast down the hill and ended up crashing on the first corner on the first lap!

So it ended up being a very short race, but I managed to find myself in a few photos from other people’s flickr accounts which was pretty cool (I’m the top result under the flickr search “smithfield crash”!)

The Real Ironman?

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

Went to watch Iron man the other week, it actually had some quite nice bits in it - but as predicted wasn’t the most amazing of films. However I found this wicked site on people who have actually attempted similar robot type-suits in real life, this is my favourite attempt, General Electric’s ‘Hardiman’:

hardiman2.jpg

“In 1965, General Electrics was the first to try creating an exoskeleton for humans. But the first iteration went berserk — kicking, bucking and gyrating so much, they never chanced it with a human inside. The project was scaled down to an arm that would be able to lift 750 pounds, enough to load up a bomb onto a plane on an aircraft carrier. Big problem, though: The arm itself weighed 1,500 pounds, far beyond anyone’s capacity to handle it. The idea was scrapped”

… Very funny (though very mean) video of someone walking through the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas with one of those ‘TV be gone’ universal remotes. Watch video

The Shock Doctrine by Alfonso Cuarón and Naomi Klein

Monday, December 17th, 2007

This is interesting: Alfonso Cuarón, director of “Children of Men”, and Naomi Klein, author of “No Logo”, present a short film from Klein’s book “The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism.” Watch the film here (warning: contains some disturbing imagery) or find out more info at http://www.shockdoctrine.com
