Bug 10 roundup

Friday, November 7th, 2008

So here’s some of the best music video’s from last nights Bug 10 at the BFI

My favourite video was this brilliant animation by Laurie Thinot for the band Autokratz:

Funniest video goes to Rogier van der Zwaag for ‘Nobody Beats the Drum‘:

Wierdest / filthiest video is a joint winner by Eric Wareheim for Parisian Goldfish by Flying Lotus and also Keith Schofield’s viral trailer for Diesal.
WARNING: neither of these videos are suitable for work, home, kids, adults or anyone who might be offended … by anything! (which is why I’ve linked rather than embedded them)

My Secret Heart

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Love this video - excepts for the ‘My Secret Heart‘ exhibition, the visuals were created mainly in C++/openGL/openFrameworks (the ribbons, stars, particles) and composited with the silhouettes (shot for real) in aftereffects.

After Effects comp: STORIES

Friday, October 24th, 2008

So on the theme of ’stories’ I was thinking about intro’s and trailer’s of films where a story is often condensed down to a short period of time. So decided to go for a bit of a ‘mashup’ re-cut trailer of an existing film - The Empire Strikes Back! (You might notice the influence from the intro to ‘Snatch’)

Anyway you can check out my film here. Also as the winner for this week I get to choose the theme for next fortnight: SCARY!

One Dot Zero

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

One of my favourite events in London (though I feel I’ve missed it the last couple of years) is One Dot Zero. It’s basically a big motion graphics festival which this year is taking place at the BFI between the 14th and 16th of November. I’m a bit gutted as I’m away that weekend, but I would definitely recommend seeing it if you have an interest in these type of things - particularly try and see the Wow+Flutter and J-Star showings also the AV Departures event along with This Happened are sure to be excellent!

Tilt-shift video

Monday, October 13th, 2008

I’ve seen quite a few examples of tilt-shift photography (creating a fake shallow depth of field to make the subject look minature), however this is the first example I’ve seen of video using the effect:

After Effects comp: SOUP

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

I have to confess I got a bit lazy with this fortnights after effects battle, so here’s my last minute entry to the theme ‘Soup’ - Nick Beese won in the end and has chosen the theme ‘Story’ for night fortnight …

Rock-n-Rolla title sequence

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Haven’t seen this film yet (seems like it would be more a wait-till-video type thing) but I thought the intro title sequence by Danny Yount was pretty cool …

After Effects comp: POWER

Friday, September 26th, 2008

In the visual design department at the BBC we’re having a little on-going competition to improve our After Effects skills. The challenge is to produce a 5-10 second film on a certain theme, then do a show-and-tell to how you made it etc …

So the theme this week is ‘Power’, here’s my entry which was a modified tutorial from Video Copilot (which is a really great resource for learning motion graphic software by the way). Also well done to Andy Bird who won and now chooses the theme for two weeks time, which is gonna be … ’soup’!

James Copeman, Super8 and Noah and the Whale

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Recently I’ve really been enjoying Noah and the Whale, it’s some great music but I particularly love the music video’s directed by James Copeman. They’ve all been shot really beautifully (in super 8 I think - really need to get me one of those cameras!) … ‘5 Years Time‘ (below) is my favourite but also check out ‘Shape of my Heart‘ and ‘2 Bodies 1 Heart‘ as well.

Bug number 8

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Last night’s Bug at the British Film Institute was yet again very good, Mr. Buxton was on good form again with a guest appearance from comedy nerd and film director Richard Ayoade (that guy from the IT crowd).

My favourite video of the night was the slide-projector masterpiece ‘Knickerbocker’ by Fujiya Miyagi whic was directed by Wade Shotter (to view click on this link and select the video in the top left)

Prize for strangest film of the night easily goes to Efterklang’s song ‘Illuminant’ directed by Tobias Stretch … very strange!

Weezer’s ‘best of YouTube’ video

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Really like the new video from Weezer for their track “Pork and Beans” which basically brings together some of the all-stars from YouTube such as the Diet Coke + Mentos Experiment, the Evolution of Dance and Miss South Carolina … this band sure do make some great videos!

OH WOW!

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

An absolutely outstanding fan-vid by James Houston from Glasgow School of Art, made for the Radiohead ‘In Rainbows’ remix contest using a wicked selection of old TVs, scanners, and oscilloscopes this is sooooooo genius (also strangely emotional?!)

Big Ideas (don’t get any) from James Houston on Vimeo.

Bug round up …

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

There was good times to be had last night at Bug, though it was a bit of a shame that they seem to be having a few sound problems at the BFI (not ideal for showcasing pop videos). Nevertheless there was some great stuff shown, my favourite was this fan-video by Dennis Liu for the song ‘Again and again‘ by the band ‘The Bird and the Bee’ all based around the OSX desktop!

And for weirdness/awesomeness value check out this video by Alex Smith for the Pivot’s song ‘In The Blood

Bug this Thursday at the BFI

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

The excellent ‘Bug’ featuring the even excellent-er Adam Buxton is on this Thursday at the British Film Institute, showcasing some of the wickedest contemporary music videos. I think the event is sold out now - though if you’re really desperate to get in you can sometimes turn up on the night and see if there’s any spaces. I’ll try and do a post on some of the best ones on friday …

Persepolis

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

Things have been a bit quiet on the blogging front recently - I took last week off (which coincidentally turned out to be the sunniest week of the year so far!) But am now back at work and am working on some pretty cool stuff (more on this later) which is ace!

Anyway stuff that I’ve enjoyed recently includes this film Persepolis, which I saw in the cinema the other week - a really well crafted, beautiful bit of animation … check out the trailer here (which for some reason has been dubbed in french?!)

Superhero movies ALWAYS = bad films?

Monday, April 21st, 2008

I had a quick flick through the Apple Quicktime site to see if there was any cool trailers for upcoming films over the summer. Unfortunately it seems that yet again Hollywood seems to be churning out film adaptations of comic-book superheroes?! I understand that by doing so they tap into an already established fan base and so potentially stand to make more money - BUT (with a couple of exceptions) they are generally ALWAYS rubbish?!

Whether it’s sequels (Hellboy 2), film versions of minor superheroes (Ironman), or remakes of previous superhero films (Hulk) it always seems to guarantee an interesting trailer and a boring film? It seems particularly ridiculous that the Incredible Hulk has already had a bad remake a few years back and yet the 2008 CGI-Hulk seems to look just as unbelievable as the 2003 CGI-Hulk?

UPDATE: This spoof news report by the Onion sums up my feelings nicely I think!

Home made TRON movie - with no CGI!

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

I’m really loving this post on CDM of some guys who have remade the tron movie without the use of any computer generated imagery! Watch the video here - Genius!

Then again when you combine ‘homemade’ with ‘tron’ you’re always bound to come up with a winner - who can forget good ‘ol Tron Guy a few years ago (incidentally I forgot just how tight those trousers are around the crotch - ewwwww!)

Great new music videos

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

Creative Review have written a great post featuring some current cool new music video’s. My favourite of which is this one, directed by Keith Schofield for the Supergrass song ‘Bad Blood’. It basically features a wicked trick of locking the camera axis point to random objects and actions in the video … though rather than trying to explain it’s better to actually just watch it.
