Final year shows

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

It’s that time of the year again for art college students to be showing cool stuff around London - I went down to the Central Saint Martins post graduate show today down by trafalgar square, some really great stuff going on in communication design, digital media, illustration and typography. I particularly liked the work by Rob Porter and Iria Lopez Gonzalez (pictured below)

Some brilliant stuff by Robert Corish too!:

Vintage and Retro design

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Wow I think Smashing Magazine definitely gets the favourite blog of the month award - a great post here all about retro and vintage design (I particularly love James White’s “retro cosmic” stuff!)

RumbleTV

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Stumbled upon this in Make Magazine, it’s pretty random - there’s something I really like about it though? (Reminds me of something you’d see in the Terry Gilliam film, Brazil?)

Check out this clip of it in action

Biggin up my mum’s mad art skillz

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

So I have to say a massive congratulations to the artist Rydal Hanbury (my mum) for winning a competition at the Tower of London, which essentially meant that one of her drawings got blown up to over 90ft high to cover the central tower while it’s being refurbished for the next three years!

We all went down to the unveiling this morning, and there was a surprising amount of press coverage there, in fact you can watch the lunchtime report from BBC London news here. I was also very interested to find out that apparently getting a picture blown up and printed to that size costs £35,000! (good job it wasn’t in colour?!)

Really like this video by the artist C215 workin his magic across London. To find more stuff check his flickr account or myspace page.

UPDATE: I got my info a bit wrong here - It’s C215 made by Romanywg (aka Jeremy Gibbs) - see comments.

Muxtape

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

There’s something I really love about this Muxtape site, it basically allows you to upload mp3’s and create online playlists or mixtapes. However I think it’s the interface which is almost over-the-top simple, but there’s something really beautiful and art-like about it?

The Great Trafalgar Square Freeze

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

I took part in an interesting event on Saturday, the ‘Great Trafalgar Square Freeze’. The basic idea is you get loads of people to gather in one place (I heard about it through the magic of facebook), a trumpet then sounds and everyone freezes into a position leaving others wondering what’s going on.

Anyway it was quite a spectacle, and really interesting to gauge people’s reactions - someone has put together a video of the event here, also check out the New York video which for some reason seemed more effective …

The Liverpool Nativity

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Really enjoyed the Liverpool Nativity performance shown on BBC THREE a few days back, really well told, some great music, and thought the ‘asylum seeker’ twist on it was really interesting. If you missed it, it’s available to watch for a couple more days on iPlayer
