After a bit of research I’ve decided to go with www.weheartit.com for some visual bookmarking fun (getting an invite on fffound was too difficult!) it seems to be a pretty good service for finding and savings cool images and video, although it does seem to be going down a bit too often (though I’m hoping that’s just teething troubles). Anyway you can view my profile here, if you join up please add me as a contact so we can share the excitement! Here some of the goodies I’ve found recently:
Part of me hopes these aren’t real due to stuggling childhood memories of crap drawings of houses (circular shapes were too difficult), however these etch-a-sketch drawings by George Vlosich seem to be the genuine article, one of which is currently showing at an exhibition in Washington celebrating the inauguration.
My friend Chris O’Shea has recently worked with Cinimod Studio to build the amazing art installation ‘Beacon’ - “a kinetic light installation with a mind of its own. An array of emergency beacon lights interacts with visitors, tracking their movement through the space, creating an immersive and playful experience.” More information on Pixelsumo, also check out the video for a better explanation …
A new temporary gallery has opened up in Soho “full of affordable graphic art, sculpture, clothing, homewares and assorted ephemera, created by a host of illustrators, designers and printmakers such as Swifty, Rose Stallard of Print Club, Si Scott, Steven Wilson, RYCA, PhlAsh (Phil Ashcroft) and many more⦔
If I was in New York from the 4th - 7th of December I’d be going to this: BLIP FESTIVAL 2008, a four-day event showcasing nearly 40 musicians and visual artists occupying the international low-res cutting edge … nice!
This week I’ve discovered and really enjoyed Fffound! - it’s kind of like a ‘del.icio.us’ for images - also has really good related links so you can get lost in a whole load of good pictures for a long time. One problem is that it’s invite only to join, so if you’re a member and could add me I would be SUPER grateful!
Like this Flickr set by Linzie Hunter - “experiments with hand lettering…a series based on spam subject lines in my mailbox”. More stuff on her website
The latest exhibition from Banksy seems (unsuprisingly) pretty amazing, using a whole load of animatronics he’s created this very weird but very cool pet store in New York. My favourite bit is the hot dog cages, though the chicken nuggets are pretty cool too! Notcot have made quite a nice video documenting it:
I can’t decide if ‘T.2058′ - the new installation at the Turbine hall in the Tate Modern looks quite interesting or a bit bland? I guess you can’t tell these things till you see them in person?
More info on the Guardian, also an interview with the artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster on the BBC News site.
Wow! Absolutely love Kate Moross’s work, how someone can be 22 and have so much great work AND run a record label is beyond me! Anyway check out her site, also an interesting interview with her on the Young Tate site …
Wow, this looks incredible - laser bridge installation over Blackfriars bridge! Made by Keith Bowler, it will be up over the next few weeks. More info on the Creative Review blog
Over the last year or so I’ve developed a real love of hand-written typography - I’ve think Serge Seidlitz is the MASTER when it comes to such things! (love the website too!)
I’ve had a bit of time off work over the last couple of weeks, and so have been moseying around in London and actually going to a few exhibitions including …
The Listening Post installation at the Science Museum, which was quite a cool piece of artwork by Mark Hansen and Ben Rubin (though apparently it has been around for a few years now) which pulls in thousands of posts from internet chatrooms and displays them in hundreds of LED boxes with different scenes rather like different movements in a symphony.
The Street & Studio exhibit at the Tate Modern which looks at the history of street photography alongside studio photography and how they’ve both developed over the years - this was kinda interesting though I did find some of the work wasn’t always all that, though I did like the ‘Hyena’s and Other Men’ photos by Pieter Hugo.
Finally I saw the Viktor & Rolfe exhibit at the Barbican - I have to confess I know very little about couture fashion design, but nevertheless it was really interesting, these guys come up with some pretty mad ideas!
Anyway am off to Paris tomorrow for the day, then on Sunday I’m flying of to NYC for 10 days which I’m REALLY looking forward to!
Went down to see the Street Art exhibition at the Tate Modern the other day, as expected the main giant artwork painted on to the building were very very impressive, I’d love to know how long it took to get them all up there (+ how long it’s going to take to remove them!)
Though I have to say I found some of the other bits which were planted on streets around the gallery a bit mediocre, it was a cool concept to exhibit street art in the street, but I wonder if people might consider it more if it was placed in the context of a gallery?
An interesting programme on the other night about ‘Monkey Journey to the West’ the chinese opera by musician Damon Albarn and graphic artist Jamie Hewitt (the guys behind the Gorillaz)
You can watch the programme again on iPlayer also the opera will be showing over the next few days at the Royal Opera House in London.
Thanks to Mr. Sanvicens for telling me about this!
There’s been some great stuff appearing on the Creative Review blog recently, here’s a few of my favourites:
Artist Olafur Eliasson (the guy who did that amazing sunset installation at the Tate Modern a few years ago) has revealed his latest work in New York this time in the shape of a waterfall:
A photography project by David Levinthal and Garry Trudeau which documents the German invasion of the Soviet Union during World War II - but using toy soldiers!:
Also I love the graphic on this cardboard portable toilet (though I’m not too sure about the product?!)
Recently I’ve been reading about some pretty amazing examples of artwork which either emits light or traces light in some way. Two particularly good examples include the work of Eric Staller, who has done a whole range of both light sculptures and drawings …
Also really loved this installation/performance by Peter Coffin and Cinimod Studio which featured a 7 metre UFO containing 3000 individually controlled LED’s which is attached to an MI2 Helicopter flying 50m above! The video needs to seen to appreciate how awesome this is!
